Christmas Markets Freiburg: Medieval Squares & Glühwein | Freiburg, Black Forest, Germany

Freiburg completely exceeded my expectations and changed my mind about the Black Forest region. As someone living in Munich - which I consider the best city in the world - I wasn't easily impressed, but this city's combination of medieval charm, brilliant urban planning, and magical Christmas atmosphere won me over so completely that I created this entire video impromptu on what was supposed to be my peaceful break day. What makes Freiburg truly extraordinary is how it seamlessly blends historic Gothic architecture with modern livability - the pedestrian-focused streets with inlaid cobblestones, dual-lane tram system that accommodates bicycles and pedestrians, and beautiful street cars (many kept advertising-free to preserve their charm) create an incredibly walkable urban paradise. The Gothic Cathedral with its scandalous gargoyles and surrounding medieval building accents creates a stunning backdrop, while the Christmas market transforms at sunset when lights strung between buildings create the most magical colors. Their distinct local Pils beer - less sweet and more hop-forward than Bavarian Helles - offers a delicious taste of regional character, and even their schnee balls rival those from Rothenburg in quality. I've watched other creators cover this town and they never really sold me on it, but Freiburg impressed me so much that I had to share it with you - it's absolutely worth the journey from Bayern or anywhere else in Germany.
